Double-metal cyanide (DMC) complexes synthesized by using ZnCl2, K3[Co(CN)6], and organic complexing agent as main components are well-known catalysts for epoxide polymerization. As the catalysts do not significantly promote the isomerization of propylene oxide, polyethers having low unsaturation values and high molecular weight can be prepared, compared to potassium hydroxide-catalyzed polymerizations. However, these catalysts suffer from long induction time, resulting in the decrease of productivity. In this study, multi-metal cyanide (MMC) complexes were synthesized by reaction of an aqueous solution of ZnCl2, K3[Co(CN)6], and K3[Fe(CN)6] with complexing agents to form a precipitate of the MMC. Polymerizations of propylene oxide were carried out using the highly active MMC catalysts. High performance of the newly developed catalysts was demonstrated by comparing with conventional catalysts. |
