제목 Synthesis and Characterization of Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) Containing Decyl-oligo(ethylene oxide) Amphiphiles In The Side Chain and Its Liquid Crystalline Property
초록 Novel poly(ethylene oxide)s containing decyl-oligo(ethylene oxide) amphiphiles in the side chains such as Dec-nEO-TE and Dec-nEO-SE were synthesized. Dec-nEO-TE has oxyethylene backbone and decyl-oligo(ethylene oxide) thiomethyl side group, and Dec-nEO-SE has decyl-oligo(ethylene oxide) sulfonylmethyl side group, where n represents the number of ethylene oxide units. Among the Dec-nEO-TEs, only Dec-4EO-TE showed a mesophase, while all the Dec-nEO-SEs showed mesophase regardless of the number of n. The formation of the mesophase for Dec-4EO-TE was ascribed to the amphiphilic structures of the polymer. For Dec-nEO-SE, the mesomorphic property was ascribed to the dipole interactions between the sulfone groups. The transition temperature was decreased as n increased because of the plasticizing effect of the side chain. The mesophases of the polymers were observed by polarized optical microscopy.
