A self-powered electrochromic display was explored using a mechanical energy harvester based on organic electrodes taking advantage of their low-cost, highly flexible and bendable properties. For the energy harvesting devices, flexible poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films were applied as an electrode through the solution-casting polymerization (SCP). Due to the strong adhesion between organic electrodes and various dielectric polymers, the energy harvesting devices showed very stable output over repeated mechanical stimuli. Thus the initial Jsc output of the PEDOT based all organic harvester maintained the same value even after 30,000 times of successive mechanical stimuli. The harvested energy were collected using an appropriate electric circuit including capacitors. Combined with a low-energy consuming bistable electrochromic device, a self-powered electrochromic device was successfully realized through mechanical stimuli on the energy harvesting device. |
