A microfluidic device was used with UV exposure for making the functional particles using tripropylene glycol diacrylate (TPGDA)/4-cyano-4’-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) and RM257/5CB mixtures with a photoinitiator as the dispersed phase and 2 wt% SDS and PVA in distilled water as the continuous phase; TPGDA and RM257 are photo-reactive monomer and UV-sensitive liquid crystal monomer, respectively. The initial homogenous TPGDA/5CB droplet was phase-separated into the two-phase droplet and the orientation of RM257, which mimicked that of 5CB in the RM257/5CB droplet, was fixed by UV exposure. The phase-separated and the oriented droplets were easily observed from a polarized optical microscope. The various shapes of the droplets including porous and anisotropic spheres could be produced after removing 5CB with ethanol from the droplets. This facile method may be applied to many fields such as drug delivery and an ink-jet system. |
