Tretreatment of rice straw using planetary or attrition mills: a new and promising eco-friendly method to improve the bioconversion process |

In this study, we proposed efficient and eco-friendly methods for the pretreatment of rice straw, one of lignlicellulosic biomass using planetary and attrition mills. Both methods are effective to reduce biomass size and crystallinity of cellulose in rice straw. In enzymatic saccharification process, only glucose and xylose were produced from the rice straw treated by planetary or attrition mills. Typically, planetary mill treatment is more effective to improve the monosaccharide production. Both methods did not lose biomass during the process while SAA (soaking aqueous ammonia) and alkaline treatment caused biomass loss of 32.3% and 10.3%, respectively. In addition, planetary and attrition mill processes produced 0.37 g/l and 0.25 g/l of phenolic compounds but SAA and alkaline pretreatment processes produced 0.95g/l and 2.34g/l of phenolic compounds. |
