The intensity of biofuel research is growing as the global energy markets are focusing on environmentally sustainable sources for liquid fuels. 3rd generation biofuels, (derived from aquatic biomass), offer a number of advantages over typical land based biomass, but also pose significant challenges for fuel production, due to their significant mineral content and inherently large moisture. This research presents several industrial scale production routes for biofuels based on pyrolytic conversion of brown seaweed. Process simulation is performed in Aspen Plus® and is directly based on published experimental data. Technoeconomical comparison is performed on three distinct cases: (i) Fixed bed reactor + acid wash pretreatment, (ii) Fluidized bed reactor + no pretreatment; (iii) Fixed bed reactor + water wash pretreatment. Finally, Minimum Product Selling Price is determined for each case, after which, ecological and economical sustainability is discussed. |
