A study on VOCs adsorption behaviors of pitch-derived activated carbon fibers |

An increase in environmental concerns has continued to drive strict regulations of the hydrocarbon emissions (ex, evaporated fuel) from automobiles, even when the vehicle is not operating. In order to solve these evaporated fuel issues, automobile canisters which contains activated carbons having large mesopores are normally employed. In this study, pitch-derived activated carbons fibers (ACFs) were prepared by a steam activation method. The structural characteristics of ACFs were observed by a XRD. Pore characteristics were investigated by N2/77K adsorption isotherms. Butane working capacity (BWC) were observed according to the ASTM D5228. From the results, ACFs shows improved BWC total values and especially adsorption velocity compared to commercial activated carbons. It is concluded that BWC of canisters can be controllable by the ACFs characteristics themselves or blending with commercial activated carbons. |
