Ultrafiltration membranes composed of polyethersulfone (PES) and carbon nano-onion (NO) were fabricated to enhance hydrophilicity and antimicrobial activity. Polyethersulfone were functionalized by sulfonic acid by reacting PES with chlorosulfonic acid in sulfuric acid. Oxidized NO (ONO) were prepared by Hummers method in which nano-onion reacted with sulfonic acid, sodium nitrate and potassium permanganate. The formation of sulfonated PES (sPES) and ONO was confirmed by FT-IR, NMR, XPS and XRD analyses. The morphology of membrane was observed by FE-SEM. The hydrophilicity and water flux of the ONO/sPES membranes increased with increasing sPES content. ONO showed excellent antimicrobial activity and ONO/sPES membrane containing 5 wt% ONO also displayed good antimicrobial activity. Membranes having antimicrobial activity, high water flux, and improved fouling resistance without a loss in solute rejection could be fabricated by blending PES with ONO. |
