There has been worldwide attention on the treatment of nuclear waste, because large amount of radioactive contaminants frequently caused serious environmental issues. Especially, massive amount of radioactive iodine has been released into the environment resulting from nuclear plant accidents and biomedical applications such as radiation therapy. Therefore, a lot of desalination processes employing various inorganic and organic adsorbents have been reported to remove radioactive iodine from the contaminated environment. Herein, we report the chromatographic method for highly efficient and specific capture of radioactive iodine. Gold nanoparticles-immobilized dextran gel columns showed excellent removal capabilities (> 99%) of radioactive iodine in various solutions. These results demonstrated that our desalination process can be a useful method for the treatment of radioactive iodine in water. |
