Encapsulation of β-Carotene into Nanoparticles immobilized on PVP fibers by Electrohydrodynamic Jetting of Counter-charged Nozzles |

β-Carotene is known for its function as provitamin A and a natural antioxidant. It is easily oxidized by light and heat exposure. Encapsulation by co-axial electrospraying is used to protect the sensitive active materials. Encapsulation of β-carotene into PLGA nanoparticles combined with PVP fibers would enable us to control the release rate of β-carotene. EJC, electrohydrodynamic jetting of countercharged nozzles, was based on the neutralization phenomenon between electrospun fibers and eletrosprayed droplets. Because the surfaces of the fibers and the droples have opposite charges, the two different materials uniformly combined each other. SEM observation showed that the particles are well dispersed onto the surface of fibers. The light stability of the encapsulated β-carotene was increased upon exposure to UV irradiation. This method has a potential application in different types of food or pharmaceutical products where maximum protection or sustained release is required. |
