Kenaf has attracted considerable attention as a renewable resource. Kenaf can be grown under a wide range of weather conditions. Modification of kenaf fiber by graft polymerization provides a significant route to alter chemical properties, including surface hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity. Electron beam irradiation is an efficient and fast method for grafting. In this study, we employed the acrylic acid as a hydrophilic polymer due to its high wettability. The surface of kenaf fiber was activated by electron beam irradiation and acrylic acid was then graft polymerized onto the surface of kenaf fiber. The grafting rate increased with increasing grafting time. After the graft polymerization, the chemical structure and wettability of the surfaces were measured by FT-IR, and contact angle analysis. |
