Microbial Fuel Cell using Yeast and Polyethylenimine Coated Carbon Felt Biocatalyst |

Carbon felt (CF) is commonly used as electrode material in Microbial Fuel Cells. Surface modification of CF become the aim of this work to enhance the power output. The CF is coated with polyethylenimine, while chemical and morphological characteristic is analyzed by using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Digital Optical Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. Performance of MFCs is evaluated with plain CF without any surface modification by measuring Open Circuit Voltage and I-V curve in dual compartment of flowing batch MFC by using yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as bioanode catalyst. The growth rate of yeast in in-vitro condition is 1.083 h-1, while the OCV and MPD resulted by MFC adopting CF-PEI as electrode is 21.9% and 108.4% respectively higher than plain CF. The increasing performance of MFC adopting CF-PEI seems to be related to hydrogen or van der Waals bonds and also physical entrapment between CF-PEI, yeast, and substrate. |
