Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the deterioration or breakdown of the macula which is a part of the retina responsible for central vision. Currently, the most favorable treatment for AMD is the anti-VEGF therapy; however, it has limitations such as high cost, repeated injections, and unwanted side effects. Here, in an effort to overcome such problems and develop new treatment methods for AMD, we prepared seven fluorescently labeled compounds with different surface groups in order to systematically compare and find the optimal structures that can facilitate the penetration of macromolecular compounds into the diseased retinal layers. Interestingly, our preliminary in vivo results showed that several intravitreally injected compounds had penetrated into the deeper retinal layers as confirmed by the analysis of confocal microscopic images of the cryosectioned eyes. We envision that this study would provide valuable information in designing advanced therapeutics for AMD. |
