Herein, the morphology of montmorillonite nanocomposites with a novel ionic thermoplastic elastomer, poly((t-butyl-styrene)-b-(ethylene-r-propylene)-b-(styrene-r-styrene sulfonate)-b-(ethylene-r-propylene)-b-(t-butyl-styrene)) (tBS-EP-SS-EP-tBS; SSPB) pentablock copolymer, was observed. It was confirmed from scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction that the functionalization of MMT via grafting of sulfonated side chains leads to better dispersion and more intercalated morphology in the SSPB matrix. The SSPB/sulfonated MMT nanocomposites revealed better ion-transport character and mechanical strength than the pristine SSPB block copolymer and the SSPB/raw MMT nanocomposites. It was assessed in our group that the performance of the SSPB nanocomposites surpasses that of DuPont’s Nafion in terms of ion conductivity and mechanical strength. |
