Anion-Exchanging Membranes for Ionic Polymer Actuators |

Ionic polymer actuators are promising candidates for the artificial muscles due to their large, fast and soft deformation under low operating voltage (1–5 V). Nafion is most typical cation-exchanging polyelectrolyte membranes for the ionic polymer actuators for its high ionic conductivity and excellent chemical properties. However, they have the disadvantages including a fast back-relaxation and dehydration of water. Herein, we present the ionic polymer actuator using methylated ether-linkaged polybenzimidazole (mPBI-OO) anion-exchanging membranes. The mPBI-OO membranes can control the ionic conductivity by conventional anion exchange process. The mPBI-OO membranes are exhibited excellent mechanical properties in hydrated state. The mPBI-OO ionic polymer actuators are easily fabricated by painting the electrode materials on the mPBI-OO membranes, and it shows fast bending deformation at low dc operating voltage without back-relaxation behavior. |
