In times of rising environmental issue, use of biomass monomer for various polymer has become suitable solution for decreasing CO2 emission and using less petroleum based material. Here, citric acid (CA), one of the inexpensive biomass material, was used to synthesize superabsorbent polymer (SAP), along with various diols without any catalyst. SAP has traditionally synthesized with acrylic acid but it is embryotoxic, also non-degradable. The CA has three carboxylic acid functional which can induce natural crosslinking effect during the esterification process as well as degradation. In order to increase the absorbency of SAP, sodium citrate was synthesized and used in esterification at various content. The sodium ion acts as withdrawing center for water which increased absorbency from 157% to 804%. This result opens up the possible usage of biomass monomer in SAP. The structure was analyzed using ATR equipped FT-IR and the absorbency was measured using infrared moisture meter, AMB 50. |
