Ecofriendly electrorheological (ER) fluids are developed by adopting vegetable oils as insulating liquid media and silica/titania hollow nanoparticles as the dispersed electroresponsive particles. Four different biodegradable vegetable oils are used as carrier liquids due to their high biodegradability compared to the conventional carriers, such as silicone oils. Furthermore, the magnesium, which is a biodegradable and non-toxic metal, is used as a dopant to increase the electroresponsive activities of the fluids. Ascribed to the hollow structured nanoparticles, the synthesized eco-friendly ER fluids exhibit excellent dispersion stability as well as high shear stress.
