제목 | Enhanced microalgae cultivation in open raceway pond by species alternation |
초록 | Microalgae, the third generation biomass, is considered to be a promising renewable energy source as it captures carbon dioxide in the atmosphere or from other sources (e.g. flue gases) while producing valuable products such as biofuels. Open raceway pond (ORP) is an outdoor cultivation system with lower operating costs than other cultivation methods. However, since the productivity of ORP highly depends on the seasonal pond temperature, it is difficult to achieve stable production of microalgal biomass. One possible approach to address this problem is the alternation of cultivated species based on their cardinal temperatures and the average pond temperature. To this end, in this study, we analyze the effects of species alternation on the microalgae cultivation in ORP. Specifically, we consider three microalgae species whose cardinal temperatures are significantly different from one another. The base case, where a single species is cultivated throughout the year, is compared with the species alternation case to evaluate the efects of species alternation on the productivity and economics of ORP. |
