Sulfonated poly(styrene-co-vinyl pyrrolidone)/PE composite membranes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells |

The sulfonated poly(styrene-co-vinyl pyrrolidone)/PE composite membranes were prepared using porous PE substrates for polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) applications. The porous PE film was filled with monomer solutions and then thermal polymerization was carried out to make composite membranes. The mixing ratio of two monomers, styrene and vinyl pyrrolidone, was varied and di-vinylbenzene(DVB) was used as a cross-linker. The prepared membranes were sulfonated using the chlorosulfonic acid and 1,2-dichloroethane mixture. The composite membranes were characterized in terms of their morphological, chemical and thermal properties. FT-IR spectra showed proper polymerization and sulfonation results. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) showed the dense surface and cross-sectional images of the composite membranes filled by sulfonated poly(styrene-co-vinyl pyrrolidone). The sulfonated composite membranes showed good proton conductivity and thermal stability. |
