Host-defense peptides are the immune system to protect the organisms against pathogens in nature. Magainin-2 is a class of antimicrobial peptides from the frog and it shows a high efficiency to kill Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria by membrane disruption. However, the proteolytic degradation of peptides in the cell decreases the antimicrobial activity. Peptoid, N-substituted glycine oligomers, is one of the well-known peptide mimics because it has stable, sequence-specific structures. The antimicrobial peptoids have been actively investigated to enhance the potency and selectivity. Herein, we carried out the structure and activity relationship study of the cationic amphipathic peptoids; in particular, the modulation of helical structures adjusted the interaction between the peptoids and bacterial membrane and influenced the antibacterial activity. |
