Fabrication of Sulfonic Acid Functionalized Mesoporous Silicas and Application as an Efficient Support for Immobilization of Chiral Co(III) salens through the Ionic Pair Formation |

The new application of sulfonic acid(-SO3H) functionalized SBA-15 and SBA-16 was demonstrated as an effective method for the immobilization of chiral salen complexes on the surfaces. The cationic chiral cobalt(III) salen complexes were immobilized by electrostatic interactions with alkyl and aromatic sulfonic groups via HO3S-functionalized linker on the inorganic supporter. For new development in the synthesis of mesoporous supporters, the sulfonic acid-functionalized SBA-16 silica was successfully obtained with a high mesoscopic ordering by direct co-consendation of alkoxysilane and organosilane compounds in the presence of surfactants. These chiral cobalt(III)-SO3 salen complexes attached on the mesoporous supporters via sulfonic acid linker have exhibited the excellent activity in the asymmetric ring opening reaction of racemic epoxide by water and phenol nucleophiles. They could be recycled without much activity loss and be isolated easily from the product solution. |
