Anion-modified Cu-based metal oxide thin film photocathodes |

Anion-modification or anion-exchange has attracted much attention throughout oxide research for its tuning capability of various physical properties. For example, band gap can be reduced as nitrogen partially substitutes oxygen in wide band gap materials such as SrTiO3. Fluorine can improve electrocatalytic activity when embedded in oxygen sites of perovskite-type cathode materials of SOFC. In this research we investigated the effect of sulfur-modification of oxygen in CuBi2O4 (CBO), a newly emerging copper-based p-type photocathode material, on the photoelectrochemical properties. Due to the similar valence electronic structure (3S23P4) and relatively large ionic radius of sulfur, it can be expected that sulfur easily substitutes for oxygen with lattice distortion. However, there is no obvious structural difference as sulfur is doped at oxygen sites in CBO films. The optical band gap is highly reduced from 1.75 eV to 1.18 eV as theoretical calculations predicted. Related change of photoelectrochemical properties will be discussed as a function of doping concentration of sulfur. |
