Electrolytes are essential components in diverse electrochemical devices, and are required to have both high ionic conductivity and mechanical robustness. In this work, we propose highly ionic conductive and mechanically robust ion gels consisting of a random copolymer and room temperature ionic liquid. The ion gels showed high elastic modulus (~0.105 MPa) and ionic conductivity (~1.15 mS/cm) at room temperature. To evaluate the capability of the gels as solid-state electrolytes, we fabricated electrochromic devices (ECDs) by incorporating anodic species (dimethyl ferrocene, dmFc) and electrochromic (EC) chromophores (ethyl viologen, EV2+) into the gel. The resulting ECDs displayed low-voltage operation, large optical transmittance contrast, and good cyclic coloration/bleaching stability. Based on the mechanically robustness of the ion gels, we demonstrated flexible ECDs on plastic. The ECDs exhibited excellent bending durability against both compressive and bending strain. |
