초록   Liquid crystal (LC) orientation has been widely studied due to better performance for LC displays, such as computers, televisions, tablets, and cell phones. Especially, solution-process takes advantage of low cost, simple manufacturing method, easy application to the flexible displays, and easy control for multi-component. However, it is composed of many pores and pin-holes which result in high pre-tilt angle and low anchoring energy.
For the investigation on the effect of multi-stacked layer (MSL), 0.1M and 0.3M hafnium oxide (HfO2) alignment layers were fabricated via a solution-process for LCs orientation. 0.1M and 0.3M solutions were prepared using hafnium chloride [HfCl4] in 2-methoxyethanol (2-ME) solvent of 10 ml for 0.1M MSL and 0.3M mono layer (ML) with mono-ethanolamin (MEA) and acetic acid. The solutions were spin-coated and annealed in a furnace, but MSL consists of three sub-layers using 0.1M solution. Then, ion-beam irradiation was treated with 1.8 keV for 2 min.
HfO2-based LC cells were investigated through pre-tilt angle using crystal rotation method and surface roughness using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The pre-tilt angles were 0.6° for 0.1M MSL cell, and 1.2° for 0.3M ML cell. The value of surface roughness with MSL was higher than that of the ML cell and their values were 1.2 nm and 1.0 nm, respectively. It makes the force between LCs and alignment layer high indicating that LCs were well fixed with high anchoring energy. Therefore, pre-tilt angles became low and LCs were well orientated.
