제목 Alcohol-Treated Porous PTFE Substrate for the Penetration of PTFE-Incompatible Hydrocarbon-Based Ionomer Solutions
초록 For a mechanically stable electrolyte membrane, pore-filling membrane impregnating hydrocarbon (HC) ionomer into porous substrate is one of a strategy to increase dimensional stability and suppress the swelling of ionomer. However, incompatibility between porous substrate and HC ionomer solution is an obstacle to the manufacture of the pore-filling membrane. Here, we report a facile method for fabrication of the composite membrane using porous PTFE as substrate and poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) as a HC ionomer. Appropriate solvents for the surface treatment were determined from the contact angle analysis, and it was found that alcohol solvents effectively reduced the interfacial energy to facilitate the penetration of the SPAES/NMP solution into the pores of PTFE. Using this method, the SPAES/NMP contact angle was reduced in half, and we could fabricate mechanically tough PTFE/HC composite membranes, which were microscopically almost void-free.
