In-situ synthesis of novel metal/ZnO heterostructured nanocomposites for photocatalysis |

A high yield of the heterostructured nanocomposite between novel metal nanoparticle and ZnO nanorod with different metal contents is successfully prepared through a simple in-situ solvothermal method in oleylamine as both solvent and ligand. The samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The results show that all samples are composed of metallic Ag, Au and ZnO. In addition, Ag or Au nanoparticles specifically locate on the side face of ZnO nanorods. The presence of metallic Ag or Au nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO nanorods promotes the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and thus enhances the photocatalytic activity. Au nanoparticle loaded ZnO nanorods showed higher photoactivity than Ag nanoparticle loaded ZnO nanorods, regardless of metal content. The facile process proposed here may pave the way for designing simple and easy process for the fabrication of metal nanoparticle/metal oxide nanorod nanocomposites. |
