Highly efficient solar cells via control of the electrode work function using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) |

We investigated the use of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) based on amine group –NH2 that react with surface of indium tin oxide (ITO) and intrinsic Si in order to modify its work function, surface morphology and the charge injection in Si thin-film and organic solar cells. 3-amino-propyl-triethoxysilane (APTES), possessing –NH2 groups, are found to tune the work function of ITO and intrinsic Si in the range of 4.50-5.10 eV. This SAMs have been adopted as an interfacial layer between the ITO and photoactive layer or intrinsic Si and Al cathodes from solution process. The Si thin-film and organic solar cells treated SAMs showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.68 % (Jsc= 15.51 mA/cm2, Voc= 0.80 V, FF = 61 %) and 5.46 % (Jsc= 14.30 mA/cm2, Voc= 0.73 V, FF = 52 %) under AM 1.5 G solar simulator at 100 mW/cm2 light illumination. |
