Evaluation of PVA/CMC composite prepared by gamma-ray irradiation |

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) have received increasing attention in biomedical and biochemical applications, because of their properties such as being water-soluble and biocompatible. In this study, PVA/CMC composite applicable to artificial cartilage was prepared by a freezing-thawing technique and a gamma-ray irradiation. The morphology and the change in crystallinity of the PVA/CMC composite was identified by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thermal properties of the composite were investigated via a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The interaction of the composite after an irradiation was then studied by an attenuated total reflection (ATR). |
