Intrinsic Chiral Conformation from Achiral Rod-shaped Smectic Liquid Crystal with Phenyl Ester Moiety |

To date, the banana-shaped achiral molecules are unique system having intirinsic chirality that was formed from achiral compounds, possibly due to its conformation chirality. However, the reason why the conformational chirality is restricted to the bent-core molecules has been much debated, in spite of the current research activity in this field, and still remains as an open question. Here, we show that two simple rod-like achiral molecules containing phenylene ester moiety with octyloxy chains and phenylene ester moiety with perfluorododecyl group can exhibits the intrinsic chiral induction, which were mainly confirmed by circular dichroim measurements. Unlike the previous examples of achiral molecules showing chirality, these achiral molecules are neither banana-shaped molecules nor molecules with chiral dopant or chiral environment. |
