Sulfated alginate were prepared from native alginate have been shown to exhibit a variety of biological activities. We prepared sulfated alginates using different molecular weight alginates as well as by varying sulfur feeding ratio. Increase in sulfation was confirmed with FT-IR, Proton NMR, ICP-AES, EA and GPC techniques. Four samples such as HMWF(high molecular weight fucoidan), S-LLMWA-4.0(sulfated low molecular weight alginate), LLMWA(very low molecular weight alginate) and LLMWF(very low molecular weight fucoidan) showed non-haemolytic and non-cytotoxicity activities. Thus results indicate that prepared sulfated alginate can be applied for any clinical applications.
