Characterization of Product Fractions from Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Tetraselmis sp. Biomass |

Microalgal bioenergy could replace fossil energy and reduces its greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae would be attractive conversion method by skipping the energy intensive drying step from wet biomass. HTL of Tetraselmis sp. was investigated over a water subcritical range of temperatures (250-350℃) and reaction times (up to 120 min), using a batch type reactor. The four different product fractions (gas, biocrude, aqueous phase, and solid) were quantified and analyzed. As a results, fatty acids were the most abundant components in biocrude, and N-containing compounds were increased as reaction temperature elevated. The maximum biocrude oil yield was 55.0% w/w of biomass at 350℃ and 40 min reaction time, the yield of energy return as a biocrude was 80% of total energy of the starting biomass. |
