제목 A New Paradigm in Materials Design: Self Healing - Manufacture of Microcapsules
초록 Microcapsules for self-healing applications were manufactured with different shell materials from urea-formaldehyde (UF) to melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) containing various healing agent candidates, endo-DCPD (endo-dicyclopentadiene), ENB (5-ethylidene-2-norbornene), mixtures of ENB with DCPD at different ratios (1:3, 1:1, 3:1), and ENB with a crosslinking agent, by means of in-situ polymerization in an oil-in-water emulsion. Resulting microcapsules were observed under optical and scanning electron microscopy for their capsule morphology, outer and inner surfaces roughness, and shell thickness, etc. Particle size analysis showed narrower size distributions for MUF microcapsules with a mean diameter around 120 m. The MUF microcapsules were found to be more stable comparing to UF microcapsules thermally from thermogravimetric analysis and mechanically from single microcapsule test. Overall, the MUF microcapsules exhibited superior properties for fabricating self-healing materials.
