Functionalized activated carbon for the simultaneous removal of Hg(II) and phenol from aqueous solutions: Batch and column studies |
초록 |
Activated carbon (AC) was obtained from agriculture by-product i.e., areca nut waste. The activated carbon was functionalized with succinic anhydride under microwave irradiation. Batch experiments showed that higher pH significantly favours the removal of Hg(II) whereas phenol removal was insignificantly affected by the change in solution pH. The equilibrium state sorption data fits better to Freundlich adsorption isotherm and the kinetic data follows pseudo-first order kinetic model. Further, fixed bed column study was conducted and the sorption capacities under dynamic conditions were evaluated using non-linear Thomas equation. Therefore, the present study showed that the AC functionalized with succinic anhydride can be effectively employed for the simultaneous removal of Hg(II) and phenol from aqueous solutions. |
