Titanium-tethered lipid bilayers for controlled nitric oxide release of cardiovascular devices |

The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility and potential use of tethered supported lipid bilayer (tSLB) coating on stent with a lipophilic NO donor incorporated within the phospholipid bilayer, to achieve a NO controlled and sustained release rate. Surface characterizations including confocal microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed successful bilayer formation on the surface of titanium. NO release profiles were sustained up to 24 hrs. In vitro cell study demonstrated that NO release enhanced endothelial cell proliferation. Finally, these results open a door for the potential use of TLB coating that utilizes therapeutic agents in biomedical devices. |
