Wear properties of UHMWPE/Kaolin composites prepared by in-situ Ziegler-Natta polymerization |

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has excellent tribological properties because of its high impact strength, stiffness and self-lubricant properties. In this study, we have polymerized UHMWPE/kaolin composites through in-situ Ziegler-Natta polymerization method and investigated their wear behaviors. Wear test was performed on a ring-on-block type apparatus without lubrication. The polymerized composites exhibited excellent wear resistance and their wear behaviors were strongly dependent on the filler content. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of frictional surfaces of wear specimens showed that the wear mechanisms of the polymerized composites are totally different from those of unfilled UHMWPE. Wear rate of the polymerized composites was significantly lower than unfilled UHMWPE and mechanically blended composites. Dispersion state of kaolin and its interfacial properties in the polymer matrix are supposed to be important factors determining the wear characteristics of the composites. |
