One of the components of vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is an ion exchange membrane (IEM), which plays an important role by preventing cross mixing of the positive and negative electrolytes, while allowing the transport of ions to complete the current circuit. Since VRFB uses strongly acidic, oxidative electrolytes, IEM for VRFB is required to have excellent chemical stability. In this study, sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) multiblock copolymers containing e-withdrawing linkage groups were synthesized. We prepared sulfonated hydrophilic oligomers and non-sulfonated hydrophobic oligomers in various molecular weight. Then, multi-block copolymers with controlled ion exchange capacitys (IECs) were synthesized from these oligomers by condensation reaction. The synthesized polymers were characterized in terns of H-NMR, IEC, proton conductivity, water uptake, vanadium permeability, chemical stability, and VRFB cell performance. |
