The compatibility of thermally reduced graphene (TRG) with polyesters, composed of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) segment and poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol segment, was examined systematically. The morphology observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that the compatibility is enhanced as the content of PBT segment in the polyester is increased. This compatibility behavior was analyzed quantitatively using the percolation threshold of electrical conductivity and using the modified Halpin-Tsi equation about the modulus of the TRG/polyester composite, showing TRG's aspect ratio increase at better dispersion of TRG in polyester. As a new attempt, this compatibility behavior was analyzed numerically by Hansen's solubility parameters to provide a general numerical guideline to predict the compatibility of TRG with various polymers. |
