Waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUD) have been received much attention from both academia and chemical industry as a next generation eco-friendly VOC free coating materials. Long-term stability of dispersion as well as good mechanical properties and chemical resistance of polyurethane is instrumental in success of commercial product. Therefore, there has been tremendous effort to develop stable waterborne PUDs with high performance. In this study, we synthesized novel polycarbonate based polyurethanes having anionic sulfonic acid moiety in their soft segments. The stability of dispersion was systematically characterized by turbican during 14 days. Interestingly, it turned out that introduction of only a small amount of anionic group in soft segment greatly influenced average particle size and stability of waterborne PUDs. Several physical and mechanical properties are also investigated and correlated with degree of sulfonation of soft segment in polyurethanes. |
