In 1995,new cationic Pd(II)-, Ni(II)-based diimine ligand catalyst were synthesized by Brookhart and widely used for the polymerization of olefins. Some distinguished features of the diimine ligand catalysts are their high electrophilicities, cationic metal center and the use of sterically bulky α-diimine ligands. Especially, this type of catalysts is characterized by reduced oxophilicity and thus more functional group tolerant. In this sense, they might be used as a catalyst for the polymerization of polar monomers such as MMA. With a view to gaining insight into the polymerization of MMA by late transition metal catalysts, we therefore decided to undertake an investigation into late transition metal-catalyzed MMA polymerization. The Ni(II) precatalysts employed were prepared by changing the position of dimethyl substituents in the aryl position. |
