A new polymeric N-halamines, poly[oxy(chloromethyl)ethylene]/poly[oxy((3-chloro-4,4-dimethyl-imidazolelidine-2,5-dionyl)methyl)ethylene] copolymers (CE-CDIDEs), were synthesized first by the reaction of poly[oxy(chloromethyl)ethylene] (CE) and 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMH), followed by chlorination. After chlorination, the amide bond in the hydantoin ring can be transformed into the stable N-halamine structure. These materials characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, DSC, and TGA studies. The synthesized CE-CDIDEs exhibited potent antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli. The results showed that the chlorinated copolymer containing 48% hydantoin groups could be provided a 99.999% (5.0 logs) reduction of E. coli at a contact time of 60 min. The antibacterial properties of the chlorinated copolymers were stable during about 1 month of dry storage. |
