Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction of bromobenzophenone and diethyl biphenyl-4-ylmethyl phosphonate generated 2-(Biphenyl-4-yl)-1-(4-bromophenyl)-1-phenylethene as a mixture of (E)- and (Z)-geometric isomers. Each isomer could be isolated by recrystallization from ethyl acetate as a fine single crystal. The absolute structure of (E)-isomer was characterized by two dimensional NMR and single-crystal X-ray analyses. |
