Ketjenblack was used as a support material of anode catalyst for the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(PEMFC). Ketjenblack has more large surface area than Vulcan XC72 carbon black. This property can affect to the catalytic activity of prepared catalysts. To understand the support effects on the catalysts, Ketjenblack was chemically pretreated in NaOH solution at various temperatures. Anode catalysts were prepared using these pretreated support materials and their physicochemical properties were characterized by using XRD, XPS and Ar adsorption/desorption. The performance of prepared catalysts was evaluated by single cell test. Based on the relationship between the I-V performance and the morphology of catalyst, the basic parameters for the preparation of catalysts are suggested that the ranges of about 2.0 to 2.8nm and 5.0 to 13.5nm for the active metal size and inter-metal distance, respectively. |
