Radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP) is a useful method for introduction of functional groups into different polymer matrixes using specially selected monomers. There have been several reports on radiation-induced graft polymerization of polar monomers onto polymer subtracts with hydrophobic properties to obtain hydrophilic properties for versatile application. However, the RIGP of sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS) was not published until now because the sodium was acted as radical scavenger, as results the RIGP of NaSS can not be accomplished. In order to accomplish RIGP of NaSS, we used acceleration vinyl monomers such as styrene (St) and acrylic acid (AAc) for preparing ion-exchange membrane. As results, we successfully prepared the poly(St-co-NaSS)-g-PVDF and poly(AAc-co-NaSS)-g-PVDF membrane by RIGP method. |
