Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) has drawn attention as energy storage system of renewable energy sources for its low cost and flexible design. The anion exchange membrane is synthesized from poly(arylene ether ketone) (PAEK) with 1-(3-aminopropyl) imidazole (API) as pendant groups. The chemical structure of the synthesized membranes, PAEK-API, is analyzed by 1H-NMR. The properties of membrane such as ion exchange capacity (IEC), and vanadium ion permeability along with chemical stability and durability are tested for VRFB application and compared with Nafion® 117 membrane, the commercial membrane for VRFB application. PAEK-API showed higher IEC value than Nafion® 117 membranes. All the synthesized membranes show significantly low vanadium ion permeability compared to Nafion® 117 membranes. Also the membrane shows excellent chemical stability in electrolyte solution, and it showed good durability during 35 cycling test. |
