An emerging application for the water gas shift (WGS) reaction is on-boardpurification and production of H2 for fuel cell powered vehicles. Proton exchangemembrane (PEM) fuel cells operating with H2 from fuel processor are being increasinglyaccepted as the most appropriate power source for future generation vehicles. TheWGS reaction is a critical step during fuel processing since CO severely andirreversibly poisons the PEM electrocatalyst. Transition metal carbide catalysts wereprepared via temperature programmed carburization of the corresponding oxides with anequimolar mixture of CH4 and H2. The molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) was moreactive than a commercial low temperature shift (Cu-Zn/Al2O3) catalyst over thetemperature range explored. There was no apparent modification of the bulk phasefor the Mo2C before and after the reaction. The results demonstrate that the transitionmetal carbides are attractive candidates of WGS catalyst for automotive applications.
