Electrochemical performances of membrane-electrode assemblies based on sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone)-silica nanocomposite membranes for DMFC application |

Numerous sulfonated polyarylenes have been fabricated from the post-sulfonation of a parent thermoplastics or monomer sulfonation-subsequent polymerization. Though a high sulfonation level is necessary to exhibit sufficient proton conductivity, it may lead to excessive membrane swelling in liquid water and thereby significant reduction of mechanical strength. In this present study, silica nanoparticles were incorporated into the highly sulfonated polymer matrix to prevent excessive swelling of the membranes and to reduce the methanol transport through the membranes. The membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) were fabricated using the organic-inorganic nanocomposite membranes with high proton conductivity (> 0.13 S/cm in liquid water at 60 oC ) and low methanol permeability (< 1.4×10-7 cm2/sec). The electrochemical properties based on the MEAs were investigated under the different fuel concentration and operation temperature. |
