In this presentation, novel materials based on nanostructured organic/inorganic hybrids and their application to lithium-ion rechargeable batteries will be demonstrated. Our interest has been focused on how to suppress the safety failures that have been one of the major concerns in the lithium-ion batteries, as the demand for higher energy density is continually growing. First, a new approach enabling the target control of exothermic reaction between delithiated LiCoO2 and liquid electrolytes is presented, which is based on the nano-encapsulation of LiCoO2 by new gel polymer electrolytes. Another approach for improving the thermal stability of LiCoO2 is based on the treatment of LiCoO2 with ionic liquid. Finally, in a bid to prevent the internal short-circuits, we have developed a novel, organic/inorganic hybrid separator membrane that presents the superior thermal and mechanical stability. |
