Platinum or alloy nanoparticles on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized via an adsorption and pyrolysis. First, pristine MWCNTs were oxidized using strong acid solvents to generate some functional groups such as hydroxyl(-OH), carboxyl and carbonyl groups serving to bind the nanoparticles. After the pretreatment, platinum or alloy materials were deposited on the oxidized MWCNTs by the pyrolysis process. The platinum or alloy nanoparticles with diameters 2-5 nm were dispersed on the carbon nanotubes surface uniformly. The electrocatalysts were characterized by EDAX, XRD, and TEM. The measurement of electrocatalytic activity was performed for reduction potential of metal-OH and methanol oxidation by cyclic voltammetry. |
