제목 The Effect of ZrO2 content on Flexural strength of reaction sintered mullite-zirconia composites.
초록 Mullite-zirconia composites with 10-50wt% ZrO2 were prepared by reaction sintering at temperatures between 1300 and 1500˚C. Sintering conditions had great influence on the microstructure of mullite-zirconia composites. The needle shaped mullite grains were formed from 1300˚C but their shape and orientation changed with increase in zirconia content. The samples sintered at 1400˚C had well developed intergrown mullite needle shaped grains for the mullite-zirconia composite samples containing 20wt% ZrO2. Flexural strength was tested on 40mm span of rectangular unpolished and unnotched specimens at room temperature, using a crosshead speed of 0.6mm/s on a force measurement equipment. Increase in mullite content in the mullite-zirconia composite is accompanied by a decrease in flexural strength. In contrast, Mullite-zirconia samples containing 90wt% mullite had better oriented mullite needles as compared to the 50wt% mullite samples. Flexural strength continuously improved with increase in zirconia content in the mullite-zirconia matrix. The maximum strength of 79MPa was obtained in the 50wt% mullite-zirconia composite which were sintered at 1400˚C for 1 hour.
