Open culture systems are widely used for large-scale microalgal cultivation. These systems have chances of being contaminated by airborne substances, which may affect the algal biomass productivity, through the openings. Every year, Korea is affected by yellow dust coming from China, and the yellow dust might affect open microalgal cultures in Korea. A microalga, Teraselmis sp. KCTC12432BP was cultivated in four different photobioreactors (PBRs) with different cover designs, and also yellow dust was collected and added to microalgal cultures to investigate the effect of yellow dust on microalgal biomass productivity. As the results, PBRs without cover showed highest microalgal biomass productivity, and the biomass productivity decreased as more area of the top of PBRs was covered. Water condensed underneath the cover blocked light and caused the culture temperature to rise, negatively affecting the algal growth. In contrast, addition of yellow dust did not seem to influence microalgal biomass productivity. The composition of yellow dust might vary every year, and next year’s yellow dust could inhibit microalgal biomass productivity. However, installation of cover should be carefully decided after analyzing the increase in CAPEX, decrease in biomass production, etc. |
